Taobao, 1688 or Pinduoduo: which one your order belongs on
Taobao and 1688 are both Alibaba Group properties, and a login for one generally works on the other. That similarity hides a genuine difference in purpose, and buying on the wrong one is one of the more common ways a Singapore company overpays for goods from China.

Where the price difference comes from
It is not a discount, it is a shorter chain. Many Taobao shops are resellers who bought their stock on 1688 and added a margin for holding inventory, photographing it, and serving retail customers one unit at a time. Buying on 1688 removes that step. The trade is that you take on what the reseller was doing: buying in quantity, judging the supplier yourself, and dealing with someone whose business is not retail service.
How large the gap is varies by category. It tends to be widest on generic goods produced at scale, and narrowest where the Taobao seller is themselves the manufacturer.
The saving is per unit, not per order. If the minimum order is 200 and you need 30, the unit price is irrelevant. Buying 200 to save on 30 is a way of turning a purchase into inventory.
Freight can reverse the answer
International freight from China prices on whichever is greater, actual weight or volume. Light, bulky goods therefore ship expensively relative to their value. A product 30% cheaper on 1688 can land more expensively once you are shipping five times as many of them, particularly if you have gone up a freight bracket or switched from air to sea to cope with the volume.
Work in landed cost per usable unit, not in listing price. Our import guide sets out the components, and the landed cost calculator does the arithmetic for you.
Where Pinduoduo fits
Pinduoduo, usually shortened to PDD, is the third platform Singapore buyers ask about, and it is a different animal again. It is a discount retail marketplace built on group buying, and it competes on being the cheapest place to buy a single unit rather than on being the cheapest place to buy a hundred. Sellers are volume operators working on thin margins, and the assortment leans heavily towards low-cost consumer goods.
For a company, that makes it useful in a narrow band and misleading outside it. It is a good place to buy a cheap consumer item, to try something once before committing, or to pick up a trending product quickly. It is a poor place to build a repeat supply line, because the things that matter for that — a supplier who will still be there next quarter, a written specification, consistency between batches, the ability to put your logo on it — are exactly what a discount retail platform is not organised to provide.
Our honest rule: Pinduoduo for cheap consumer goods and small trial runs, 1688 for anything you intend to reorder. We will quote from whichever genuinely lands cheaper for the order in front of us, and we will tell you when the cheaper listing is the worse buy.
Pinduoduo is not Temu, though they share an owner. Temu is PDD Holdings' international arm and sells directly to buyers outside China, Singapore included, in English and in Singapore dollars. If a colleague says “order it off PDD” and means the app on their phone, they probably mean Temu, and for that no agent is needed at all — it already ships here. Pinduoduo proper is the Chinese domestic platform: Chinese language, Chinese payment methods, domestic delivery only, and therefore an agent's job.
A rule of thumb
| Your situation | Usually |
|---|---|
| A single item, or a handful | Taobao, or Pinduoduo if price is all that matters |
| A cheap consumer item, bought once | Pinduoduo |
| Testing a product before committing | Taobao or Pinduoduo, as a sample |
| Twenty or more, repeat purchase | 1688 |
| Your logo, your colour, your packaging | 1688 |
| Bulky and low value | Price both, then compare landed cost |
| Needs a certification or compliance mark | Neither, without checking the supplier can evidence it |
Both are hard to reach from Singapore
Neither platform is built for a buyer in Singapore. Both are in Chinese, both expect Chinese payment methods, and sellers on both generally ship domestically only. 1688 adds minimum order quantities and sellers with less patience for unusual requests. That is the work an agent does, and it is the same work either way: read the listing properly, talk to the seller, agree the specification in writing, pay in RMB, consolidate, export, import, deliver.

Common questions
What is the difference between Taobao and 1688?
Both belong to Alibaba Group. Taobao is a consumer retail marketplace where you can buy a single unit. 1688 is the domestic wholesale marketplace where Chinese businesses buy from factories and trading companies, usually with a minimum order quantity. A large share of Taobao stock is bought on 1688 first, which is why the same item is often cheaper there at quantity.
Is 1688 always cheaper than Taobao?
No. It is usually cheaper per unit once you are past the minimum order quantity, but not always, and the saving can be wiped out by freight on bulky goods or by having to buy more than you need. For small quantities Taobao is frequently the better answer, and for a first order a Taobao sample is often the cheaper way to test the product.
Can I use my Taobao login on 1688?
Yes. Both sit under Alibaba Group and share the account system, so a Taobao login generally works on 1688. That gets you in to look. It does not solve payment, domestic-only shipping, or sellers who will not deal with an overseas buyer.
What is the difference between 1688 and Alibaba.com?
Alibaba.com is the export-facing platform: English, international payment, sellers who expect to ship abroad. 1688 is the domestic Chinese platform serving buyers inside China. Prices on 1688 are usually lower because you are closer to the source and not paying for the export-facing service, which is exactly why it is harder to buy from.
Which should a Singapore company use?
It depends on the order rather than on a general preference. Under roughly twenty units, or for a sample, Taobao is usually right. For repeat purchasing, larger runs, or anything needing your logo or a specification change, 1688 usually is. The sensible approach is to price both.
Should I buy from Pinduoduo instead of Taobao or 1688?
Only for a narrow band of purchases. Pinduoduo is a discount retail marketplace built on group buying, so it is often the cheapest place to buy a single unit of a low-cost consumer item, or to try something once. It is a poor basis for a repeat supply line, because supplier continuity, written specifications, batch consistency and customisation are not what a discount retail platform is organised to provide. Pinduoduo for cheap consumer goods and small trial runs; 1688 for anything you intend to reorder.
Is Pinduoduo the same as Temu?
They share an owner but are different platforms. Temu is PDD Holdings' international arm and sells directly to buyers outside China, including Singapore, in English and in Singapore dollars, so it needs no agent. Pinduoduo proper is the Chinese domestic platform: Chinese language, Chinese payment methods and domestic delivery only, which is where an agent is needed.
